The NHS has established a clear vision: To deliver the world’s first net zero health service and respond to climate change, improving health now and for future generations.
In order to achieve this, the Greener NHS Programme has been established, setting out two specific targets:
The NHS Carbon Footprint: for the emissions we control directly, net zero by 2040
The NHS Carbon Footprint Plus: for the emissions we can influence, net zero by 2045
To deliver on this, all Trusts have been asked to produce a Green Plan by 14th January 2022 and all ICS’s by end March 2022. These plans will set the vision and ambition of each ICS area to deliver on their local priorities, with the overarching aim of being net carbon zero by 2040 and then 2045.
As well as the Greener NHS Programme, the interlinking elements of social value and sustainability, are integral parts of delivering the elements required for a more sustainable NHS and wider public sector. A key element of this is around governance, ensuring a whole system approach is achieved, so we can work together to deliver on the required joint priorities.
