Remembrance Day Services 2023

Wreath-laying ceremonies and remembrance services took place across two of our LIFTCo / CHP London sites at the weekend as people gathered to remember those who have died and those who are still fighting wars.

With Armistice Day, November 11th, falling on Saturday , some services took place on Sunday, with one on Friday 10th November.

Services remember the sacrifices of the Armed Forces in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, the special contribution of families and of the emergency services, and innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and terrorism or who continue to be affected.

Barnet residents were given the chance to pay their respects to those who have died in conflicts around the world at a Remembrance Day at Finchley Memorial Hospital on Friday 10th November. The service was led by Martin Russell, The Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Barnet.

On Sunday 12th November a wreath-laying service was held at Hornsey War Memorial, in front of the Hornsey Central Neighbourhood Health Centre, followed by a service at St Mary with St George Church opposite the site.

The events were attended by representatives of the Armed Forces, veterans, cadets, members of the emergency services, the Royal British Legion and members of the public.

Finchley War Memorial

The Finchley War Memorial was unveiled in July 2021 and is the first public war memorial in Finchley that lists the names of over 1000 Finchley residents who gave their lives in the two World Wars. The memorial stands in the grounds of Finchley Memorial Hospital and displays the names of the fallen, engraved in gold leaf on dark grey polished granite. It marks a place where families can pay their respects as well as the site of the annual Remembrance Day Service.

Hornsey War Memorial

The Hornsey War Memorial commemorates the men of the borough who died in the First World War and is in the form of a small red-brick chapel with Portland stone dressings.

The names of the dead are inscribed on plaques inside the chapel.

The memorial is located near the entrance to Hornsey Neighbourhood Health Centre.
