Have you thought about estates as an enabler to your cost improvement programme?

Since the dawn of COVID-19, agile working has been a buzzword, and we’ve seen the pendulum swing back and forth about whether people need to be in office or not. The fact is, there are productivity gains to be achieved from implementing agile working policies that consider all of the available NHS estate portfolio.

For non-clinical staff, this should be done at a system level, considering the entire estate portfolio and linking individuals to a physical base most suitable to their home location.

🚀 Key Insights from our work:

  • Digital Capability: A common barrier is ensuring staff can access the right systems across all locations. Moving towards shared systems is crucial, not only for agile working but for enhancing data insights, process efficiencies, and savings from enterprise procurement.

  • Start Small: Large change initiatives can begin with small, manageable steps.

Last year, the gbp consult team partnered with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust to analyse the home postcodes of over 900 non-clinical staff and map their travel time to each community estate asset. This initiative has empowered the Trust to:

  • Optimise Location Accessibility: Identify which locations are most accessible to staff and which assets might be better utilised as clinical space or disposed of.

  • Offer Bespoke Agile Working Contracts: Enhance work-life balance by reducing commuting time, improving staff retention, and offering attractive benefits for new recruits.

  • Calculate Carbon Reduction Savings: Measure reduced commute times to achieve tangible carbon savings.
