It’s day 4 of gbp’s 13 days of Christmas giving, and today, we highlight the work of Knitted Knockers UK, a charity that provides knitted and crocheted breast prostheses for women in the UK who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy. Women who have undergone surgery are provided with silicone breast prosthesis by the NHS, which some have found to be uncomfortable, heavy and may rub against the scars left after surgery, causing rashes and pain. Knitted Knockers UK want women to know that there is a lightweight, 100% cotton alternative that takes the form of a real breast, is soft against the skin and is breathable. Volunteers make knitted or crocheted breast prosthesis. The knockers are a lightweight alternative to the prostheses provided by the NHS. Every Knocker is ‘Made with love and filled with hope’ and provided FREE of charge.
The charity was nominated for a donation from the gbpartnerships foundation by Rachael Samain, Estates Manager, gbp manage. Rachael explained a bit more about why she nominated the charity:
“I really wanted to put forward this charity that knit breast prostheses for mastectomy and lumpectomy patients. In such a dark and difficult time, their services make women feel supported whilst they come to terms with their new body shape. These knitted knockers are provided free of charge to the patients and made by volunteers. My mum has ordered a couple and (much to my family’s embarrassment) loves to show everyone her collection – not in situ thankfully!”
